AMARI AND THE GREAT GAME 💥 by B.B. ALSTON

Listen, I stand by my statement that the Supernatural Investigations Series is by far the best middle grade series out there. I know we’re only 2 books in, but the way I need this to be like 10 books deep is real.

Book 2 is giving HP meets The Hunger Games as Amari starts her first summer as a full junior agent. She is asked by the League of Magicians to be their new leader and when she declines, it sets up The Great Game - a competition to see who will lead The League of Magicians.

I loved how the games were written into the text to give us bursts of excitement and suspense amongst an already riveting storyline. Once again, my daughter and I were supposed to read it together and I binged it in 2 days (so sorry Sister-Bear).

What I enjoy most about this story is the inclusion of realism as Amari not only fights mythical creatures as part of the bureau but fights stereotypes and assumptions about her life as a Black girl from ‘the hood’. It’s the perfect way to discuss some very poignant topics with younger kids.

If you haven’t read Amari and The Night Brothers, please start there and then give this one a go.

This one hit me right in my feels. Jael said she wrote this book as a letter to her younger self, but it feels like it could have been written for any one of us.

“One day, when you look in the mirror, you will ask yourself a question. You will wonder, am I pretty?” 😩

Our self image is something many of us still struggle with as adults and I’m convinced if we had more messages telling us how worthy we truly are, we’d be better for it. Jael’s words are beautifully written (as always) and the messaging is something we all need.

Read this with your little ones, your big ones, or just as a reminder to yourself.
